HOW TO APPLY:
PLEASE USE ONLY UP-TO-DATE WEB BROWSER (e.g. MOZILLA FIREFOX OR GOOGLE CHROME) TO FILL IN THE APPLICATION FORM.
PLEASE READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW CAREFULLY:
WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN APPLYING:
VERY IMPORTANT: During the submission process (whilst filling in the application form) please apply with light jpg images of only those works for which you have high resolution images. Please only submit images of works for which you can provide high resolution images if requested upon the selection. This greatly assists the process of putting each issue together. Our high resolution requirements for all images for print are: 300 dpi and no less than 30 cm in height*, jpg or tiff format (please note: this is not a requirement for images which should be sent to us via the application form – these are the requiremens for images which you must have if the work you submitted as light jpgs is selected for a feature). If your work is selected for publication, your submitted images should not be blurry or pixelated (even if high resolution requirements are technically correct) when requested by our production team.
*Our request for each image for print to be 'no less than 30 cm in height' should be taken into account within the proportions of your artwork. If your artwork is landscape/horizontal format, the height can be slightly less than 30 cm.
The 30 cm height requirement means that the photography of the image has to have this sizing even if your work is originally smaller than 30 cm in height. This requirement is in place to make sure we receive the highest resolution images of the work that would be equally high quality in print format.
Make sure you have read all the information and have become familiar with the magazine (online and in print) and the artists/curators we are working with. Please note that it is crucial to consider the guest curator’s work/vision as well as the magazine’s previously published artworks (in print and online) + ArtMaze’s call for art processing fees before applying to make sure that this opportunity is in line with your expectations.
You are welcome to purchase digital and physical copies of published editions via our online store to get the feel of the publication, its design and read about fellow makers https://artmazemag.com/shop/
Please don’t just blindly apply – be thoughtful of the projects and art communities you choose to be a part of (if possible do your research via all sources such as websites/social feeds etc.)
Don’t forget to have a more detailed read about our publication: artmazemag.com/about
If you have any specific questions please feel free to write us an email via firstname.lastname@example.org – we are happy to help!
SELECTION OF WORKS AND NOTIFICATION OF RESULTS:
Results for this contest will be announced around 5 weeks after the official deadline of the call to ensure that our Guest Curators and Editorial Team of Artmaze Magazine have enough time to give their full attention to each applicant’s work, carefully selecting finalists for print publications. The process may take a few days more above the normal ‘5 weeks’, so try not to worry if it takes a little longer.
Results will be posted at: www.artmazemag.com as well as via social media (Instagram and Facebook: @artmazemag). Notification will be made via email and by posting on the results page which will appear on our website’s ‘home’ page. All artists who provide a working email address will be notified via email. Type your email address correctly, if a mistake is made you will not be notified via email.
Announcement emails and urgent images requests from us tend to go to Spam folders. Please make sure to look out for an email from us if you have submitted work and if your work was selected for the publication; always check your Spam folder if you did not receive anything in your main Inbox folder.
If for any reason you did not receive an email from us – please get in touch with us asap through email@example.com or keep an eye on our website and social media as all the important announcements always appear online.
"IS HAVING AN ARTIST WEBSITE MANDATORY FOR THIS APPLICATION?"
Providing an artist website is not mandatory in order to submit work however if you have any portfolio link that could show us more of what you do other than what you have submitted - it is always very helpful.
If you do not have any online portfolio at all - not to worry - just make sure you include detailed information in your statement/bio and attach good images of your best artworks as well as all the required information.
Instagram portfolio is optional (we like looking through IG profiles!), but please understand Instagram portfolio is not always enough in order to understand the bigger scope of the progress and content of work as well as enlarging images and reading full CV. Therefore we suggest all artists try to maintain a website and update it regularly - this is really important, not just for the open call, but in general. Many people, as well as visiting multiple art shows, browse contemporary art online everyday - as do we, but we find that taking a look at the artist's website always works best in terms of getting a 'clear picture' of each artist's practice. As much as Instagram connects us all so well around the globe and brings exposure and international reach to each one of us, it does not work so well as an actual portfolio in showcasing your work professionally online*.
*We provide this information based on our working experience with artists' submissions.
"CAN I UPLOAD IMAGE DETAILS OR IMAGES OF ONLY ONE WORK IN MY APPLICATION?"
We provide a maximum of five image uploads per each application. Please upload five different works - one artwork per image/file (unless your artwork is a diptych, triptych, large or small installation etc). Please do not combine artworks with info and other images of works in one jpg. We do not advise submitting image details of works. If we are interested in a specific work we will request more images.
"DO I SPECIFICALLY NEED TO SEND 5 IMAGES OF WORKS OR CAN I SEND LESS ARTWORKS?"
We provide a maximum of 5 images uploads per submission and we strongly advise artists to send us different works (using all 5 image uploads) for consideration because it gives more chances to be selected. But if you still wish to stick with less than 5 images of works in your application - this is acceptable.
"DO I NEED TO SUBMIT WORKS FROM ONE SERIES/BODY OF WORK OR A MIXED SELECTION?"
You are welcome to send five different works from only one body of work/series or a mixed selection from your practice. This is totally your choice.
"WE ARE APPLYING AS A GALLERY ON BEHALF OF OUR ARTISTS. IS IT OK TO INCLUDE 5 IMAGES IN ONE APPLICATION FOR MORE THAN ONE ARTIST OR MULTIPLE SEPARATE ARTISTS?"
Unless you are an artist duo or applying with collaboration pieces by a group of artists, we do not accept single applications with separate works of different artists. If such submission is made it won't be considered.
"I MISSED THE DEADLINE BY MINUTES/SECONDS - CAN I SEND MY SUBMISSION VIA EMAIL OR COULD YOU EXTEND THE DEADLINE FOR ME?"
ArtMaze Magazine is following a systematised submission process via Submittable platform which is also operating fee processes. We do not accept submissions via email and extensions of expired deadlines are not possible (unless we make a special extension announcement to the call before the official deadline).
"I ATTACHED WRONG IMAGES/TEXT IN MY APPLICATION - CAN I SEND YOU THE CORRECT ONES SO YOU WOULD BE ABLE TO EDIT MY SUBMISSION?"
We urge everyone to be very attentive to our call for art requirements and extra careful whilst filling in the online form. Make sure you have enough time to think through what you will be submitting. No changes can be made once the application has been sent off and paid for. Make sure all works, including recent ones, which you are happy to showcase are also presented on your website or social media - we always check through additional information about each artist when such is provided.
If you need to change the contents of the submission that have been paid for and sent off, you will have to withdraw this submission (please get in touch directly with Submittable technical support if you cannot perform this action via your Submittable account) and submit a new submission with correct information/images. Please also make sure to reach out to us to request the refund of the submission that you have withdrew while the call for art to which you have submitted is still running. When the call for art deadline has passed, no refunds can be made.
"CAN I APPLY MULTIPLE TIMES?" or
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN PUBLISHED IN ONE OR MORE OF OUR PREVIOUS ISSUES:
If you choose to submit again: we encourage artists who have been previously published to apply each time with completely new works or new body of works which were not used for previous applications/features in ArtMaze Magazine.
"WHY WASN’T MY WORK SELECTED?" and "COULD YOU PLEASE PROVIDE ME WITH CONSTRUCTIVE FEEDBACK AS TO WHY MY WORK WAS NOT SELECTED?"
Please note, our opportunities are competition-based, therefore, if your work was published in our issues before it does not provide a guarantee that your new work will be accepted because of that. We select work based purely on the quality factor as well as taking into account the competitive nature of the opportunity, guest curator's work and previously published art in our magazine. Please be aware of the fact that we work each time with different curators who have different visions and approaches to selecting works. We work this way in order to make our publication a versatile visual platform showcasing carefully curated art. Make sure that the choice of the curator for a call is something that you are looking for when submitting work. Not all good work can be in line with each curator’s vision. Please also remember, the competitive nature of each of our calls/contests is always a big factor and unfortunately we are unable to publish everyone who applies. We accept and publish all mediums but we do not restrict each selection to a mandatory inclusion of any particular medium.
Sadly, we cannot provide all submitted artists with constructive feedback/critique on why their work wasn’t selected as this is something that is beyond our resources and physical working capacity and is a complex process in itself which requires very careful attention and time spent on constructing a specialised opinion. But if you have any questions on whether your submission was marked during the selection process or whether the curator left any notes on your application - please write us an email and we will be happy to provide any information we have.
